International Credit Union Day 2017
International Credit Union Day – October 19, 2017
We are celebrating International Credit Union Day as credit unions continue to inspire innovative approaches to banking while honouring one of their core principles by being dedicated to the communities they serve.
The first credit union in Canada was started in Quebec in 1903, today there are over 623 credit unions and caisses populaires in Canada, with almost 3,000 branches and over 5 million members. Credit unions can be found in over 100 countries with over 200 million members. International Credit Union Day was first celebrated in 1948. Globally credit unions are joined together in providing banking services that improves the lives of its members and communities on different levels.
Credit unions invest their profits locally where they operate; where their members live and work. Our credit unions are focused on strengthening Canada’s economy, keeping the money in the pockets of their members and helping communities prosper. Credit unions will continue to work to make banking easier, fairer and more affordable.
